Step It Up - I can still walk

When last we left young Luke Skywalker, he was about to face certain death in his expected conftrontation with the Dark Force (sorry, wrong topic).

After two more days in the Step It Up fitness program, I can still walk. Granted it feels like there are 45 pound weights attached to each one of my legs. I may walk funny, but boy am I feeling better. Just to recap what has brought me to this state, I’d better fill you in on the last couple days. As you may have remembered, Monday was evaluation day. Tuesday was the real start.

On Tuesday, we got going with a warmup jog and came back for our dynamic stretching/warmup drills. I always thought jumping jacks were easy, but when your legs are sore this really starts to burn pretty quickly. Warmups included a variety of exercises that I would love to explain in detail, but it may be better for you to experience in person.

After our stretching exercises, we got right to the heart of the matter. How best to torture the campers. It’s an easy recipe. Find a hill, have everyone do 10 decline pushups, rollover and do 10 incline situps, rollover and do 9 decline pushups, rollover and do 9 situps and so on until you get to zero. I personally found it a great refresher course on how to count backwards from 10. And maybe you saw this coming, but I certainly didn’t. For nostalgia sake, we then worked our way back up to 10 rotating between pushups and situps. I’ve never had such a close rapport with grass in my life.

After that, we did a variety of other drills, but I really would hate to ruin it for you by telling you all of the fun games we get to play. Needless to say, we’re definitely waking up some muscles that haven’t been abused like this for quite awhile. In a couple weeks, I’m sure I will consider it to be a good thing, but right now it hurts.

Day 3 - Hump Day - still not adjusted to this 5am thing. Started off with our usual warmup jog, with one exception. Apparently, Lisa did not get the memo that it was a warmup jog. It seemed to be more of a sprint around the Market Village. Do you realize how hard it is to window shop when you’re buzzing through? After our warmup sprint, we did our dynamic stretching exercises, starting with 85 jumping jacks. Boy, that was fun. My legs just about exploded. One more and it would have been pretty ugly.

Well after Day 2’s fun activities, I was really looking forward to seeing what our instructors were going to dream up for us today. They came up with a couple neat games. The first called quarters, involved 60 seconds of pushups, followed by a sprint, 60 seconds of situps, followed by a sprint, then 60 seconds bows and toes, followed by a sprint, then 60 seconds of lunges, followed by a sprint, then 60 seconds of body squats followed by a sprint.

That seemed like enough, but that was just the beginning because apparently the lesson today was on understanding seconds. So we then repeated the drill, but for 45 seconds for each item, then 30 seconds, then 15 seconds. Now that I got a refresher yesterday on counting to 10 and back and today’s lesson on seconds, I’m hoping we’ll cover the alphabet tomorrow.

The second really fun game was called snake. We all lined up diagonally across the field. Everyone started doing pushups. The first person had to run (snake) through the line of everyone doing pushups, then the second person, then third, etc. until the line had completely moved. We then did it again with bows and toes.

Of course, the moment of the day was when we were finished and heading out to the parking lot. The landscaping company arrived and wondered what we were up to. To see the expression on the gentleman’s face when it was explained that we’d been there exercising since 5:45, was priceless. He couldn’t believe people would get up that early to exercise. That makes two of us.

Of course, Step It Up is more than just exercise. It’s about fitness which involves eating right. Frankly speaking, it’s a whole lot easier to endure working out for an hour than it is to eat healthy all day. I’ve actually been doing very well through 2 and 3/4 of my first three days.

Unfortunately, I had to make a trip down to No Mas in Castleberry Hill tonight to check out some furniture. Seems harmless enough, but unlike their original location on Huff Road, the new location also has a restaurant. Do you realize how hard it is to shop for furniture with the smell of Mexican food wafting through the air. And even better yet, there just happened to be a business reception there, so everyone was milling around the store with margaritas and food. I was about ready to gnaw on my hand.
So needless to say, I didn’t eat as healthy for dinner as I should have. I did actually manage to avoid the alcohol, even though the margartas looked awesome. It was my first trip to No Mas Cantina. The salsa was a little different. More of pureed salsa, a little on the sweet side, with just a hint of smoked chipotle peppers. The margaritas (someone else’s) were served in large pitchers that appeared designed by Dale Chihuly. We tried the fish tacos and shrimp enchiladas. The food was okay. Definitely won’t come close to competing with Nuevo Laredo for food. But what it lacks in food it makes up for in ambience. It’s located in the hip Castleberry Hill district and has a great patio area and the indoor seating is spectacular. Certainly beats the plastic tablecloths at my fave Mexican restaurant, but I’ve always been more about the food.

You probably never thought an update on boot camp could turn into a restaurant review, but that’s what’s so exciting. You just never know where I might wander once I start writing. Until next time…

Step It Up - What was I thinking?

Well I took the challenge. I decided to sign up for the latest class of Step It Up, an exercise and nutrition program with the goal of stepping up to your next level of fitness. The programs typically run for four weeks and are based at Smyrna First Baptist Church in Smyrna, Whitefield Academy and The Walker School in Marietta. They offer programs in the wee hours of the morning (5:45am) and another at 8:30 am.

As luck would have it, the 8:30 class doesn’t work. As a Realtor here in Smyrna Vinings, I’m typically known more for working late hours than getting up early. It’s what we call Realtor hours. I can now honestly say that I actually know what people are doing at 5am in the morning. They’re all apparently sleeping! Did you know that it’s still dark outside at 5am?

I really thought the only reason people got up at 5 in the morning was to go fishing, something about catching the fish before they’ve had their morning cup of joe and were alert enough to realize that the little worm is on a hook. Am I getting off subject?

The additional challenge is that this session is actually running 5 days a week for three weeks instead of the typical four days a week over four weeks. I apparently enjoy pain.

When I arrived I was greeted by the enthusiastic instructors as promised. There were about 10 others in the class this morning, with most being newbies, with a lot more veterans expected to arrive tomorrow. We covered the basics of the program focusing on the nutritional aspects. Apparently you can exercise all you want, but if you keep eating those twinkies, it won’t do much for you. Now I know.

We have our trusty little manual which gives advice on what to eat, how much, etc. and we get to write everything down that we eat over the next three weeks. It’s not a fad diet, rather based on the food pyramid. I can avoid the bad food, maybe not the alcohol, but we really need to talk about portion size, either that or my I need a bigger deck of cards. But to keep you from feeling bad about portion sizes, they also say that you need two snacks each day as well.

The first day is largely an evaluation or assessment of your current level of fitness. We started out with a quick little jog around Market Village. It started great (as we were heading downhill), but then it wasn’t as fun as we headed back uphill to our starting point by the ball field at Smyrna First Baptist. The warmup jog was great and I was all set to go home, feeling healthier already.

Unfortunately, that was just the warmup. We then headed out to the ballfield and went through a variety of stretching drills that kept our heartbeat going and added the benefit of stretching out our muscles. These aren’t your old-fashioned stand-in-one-place-and-touch-your-toes kinds of stretches.

After the stretches, we were ready to start the evaluation part of today’s session. First off was another run. Did I ever mention that I hate running. Anyway, I think they said our course was 0.8 miles, but it felt more like 8 miles. The course took us from Smyrna First Baptist toward the Smyrna Community Center, around the lake (amazingly the ducks were awake at that hour, too) and back. It was a timed run to allow us to compare with our level of fitness at the end of the program. Does that mean we are going to have to run again?

We then went through a variety of other timed exercises, including pushups, situps, bows and toes (where you press up on your elbows and toes and hold) and dips. The only thing we missed out on were the sprints, apparently they’re saving that for tomorrow. Then some more stretching.

We wrapped up with some words of encouragement. If we miss a class without giving notice, all the other members in our group have to do 10 pushups. If we’re late, I think they said we all get to do 10 pushups per minute. I’m not real sure about that, I was starting to get dizzy. Anyway, the idea is to increase the teamwork and accountability to the team.

As I write this, I’m trying to recuperate. Something tells me it’s going to hurt a lot more tomorrow. So if anyone needs to buy a house in Smyrna today, just leave me a message and I’ll get back to you just as soon as I can walk.

Don’t let my sarcasm fool you, I am actually very excited about Step It Up and look forward to the next three weeks. And the answer to my question - “What was I thinking?” - is quite simply that I want to improve my fitness level. I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes.

Belmont Hills - Smyrna Redevelopment

Belmont Hills redevelopment in Smyrna

Cobb County’s first shopping center, Belmont Hills, opened in 1950 at the corner of Atlanta Road and Windy Hill Road in Smyrna. For years now, the Smyrna government has been pushing for the redevelopment of Belmont Hills. In fact, Belmont Hills was always considered the front-runner for $30 million in TAD financing that the city of Smyrna approved in 2003. As redevelopment plans bogged down for Belmont Hills, including the horrid thought of WalMart possibly moving into Belmont Hills, the redevelopment of Jonquil Plaza managed to pull off a bit of a coup and jump ahead of Belmont Hills.

Smyrna has committed $26.2 of the $30 million towards the Jonquil Plaza redevelopment at the corners of Atlanta Road and Spring Road. The forthcoming development will be known at Jonquil Village. With Cobb County’s school board having recently placed two moratoriums on TADs as well as a cap on money it will pledge for projects in Smyrna’s tax allocation district, it puts the Belmont Hills redevelopment in a bit of a conundrum.

Halpern Enterprises, Belmont Hills developer, has asked the city for $32.8 million in TAD financing. With the current moratorium and cap in place, there is only about $4 million available.

Halpern Enterprises has set forth a plan fo create Belmont, a dynamic mixed-use development. This exciting new retail, office and residential community will completely replace the existing Belmont Hills shopping center and present the community with new and unique dining, shopping and living alternatives. The 47.5 acre development will feature a pedestrian friendly atmosphere with wide sidewalks and bike paths. Additionally, Belmont will proudly offer a variety of architectural styles, patios, roundabout intersections and extensive landscaping creating a charming community sure to be the choice for the people of Smyrna.

The current plan includes 5 acres of green space within the mixed use development and include 912 residences split amongs condos, townhomes, luxury apartments and houses. This is something desperately needed as Smyrna continues to build for the future.

As a means of garnering support, a mailer may have just arrived at your home this past week. The mailer stipulates that the Belmont “redevelopment would not be possible, depriving the area of the benefits of a dynamic mixed-use community. You can make the Belmont redevelopment a reality by urging your District 2 County Commissioner, Joe L. Thompson, to support county TAD guidelines that would include this project.”

The Cobb County school board ultimately has the final say in the matter based on the current legislation surrounding TAD financing. What impact this mailer will have in persuading the Cobb County Commission to act will be interesting to see, but more importantly whether it will have any impact on the Cobb County school board.

If you would like to voice your support for the Belmont Redevelopment, send an email to District 2 Commissioner Joe L. Thompson at jthompson@cobbcounty.org or to the County Commissioner Sam Olens at solens@cobbcounty.org

Canoe - Smyrna Vinings Restaurants

Canoe

We recently visited Canoe, the quintessential historic Vinings restaurant, situated on the banks of the Chattahoochee River on Paces Ferry Road in Vinings. Canoe is a wonderful restaurant for those special occasions, such as weddings, receptions and private celebrations. Canoe offers a seasonal contemporary American cuisine with a wide selection of seafood and meats, anything from trout to rabbit. The restaurant is certainly unique, Southern but contemporary.

We were seated promptly with a view of the river. We were immediately greeted by Canoe’s manager and presented with their extensive wine list. After perusing their menu, we selected a lovely Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc to go with our dinner along with a bottle of San Pellegrino. We started off with a scrumptious African squash soup. The soup was mellow and warming to the palate with a pizzazz of flavor from the citrus cream dollup, toasted squash seeds and squash seed oil drizzled over the top. You’ll also enjoy the large selection of breads that are occasionally brought to your table.

For our entrees, we selected the Georgia Mountain Trout with goat’s cheese, homemade tortellini and the Seared Yellowfin Tuna with fresh hearts of palm, snow peas, wild mushroom and shoyu vinaigrette. The Georgia Mountain Trout was absolutely wonderful, very hearty and scrumptious. The Seared Yellowfin Tuna was a good complement to the Georgia Mountain Trout. It was a taste explosion. The tuna was seared perfectly to medium rare and the shoyu vinaigrette added a nice kick along with the wild mushroom ragout, the hearts of palm and the snow peas.

We wrapped up the evening with Valrhona Chocolate Soufflé Cake with a warm goat cheese center and sweet lemon ice cream. Doesn’t sound like something you’d normally select, but the large group next to our table had just tried about every dessert on the menu and raved about it. As generally happens, when you get excited about something it doesn’t meet your expectations. We found the thought nice, but the amount of goat cheese was so minimal it wasn’t really noticeable and the soufflé itself was a little overcooked.

Even though the desert was a disappointment, we were very happy with our evening at Canoe and found the appetizer and entrees to be exquisite. I would highly recommend that if you haven’t been to Canoe before, put it at the top of your list.

I’d rank it with 4.5 stars (out of 5).
