Honoring Those Who Served

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our eNews and Update Alert feed. Thanks for visiting!

the twentieth century veterans memorial 165x300 Honoring Those Who ServedThe Twentieth Century Veterans Memorial was erected in dedication to the memory of those who served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces – Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard – during the twentieth century.  The Memorial honors the living, the dead, the wounded, the missing, and the families who supported those who gave part or all of their lives to our country, in war and in peace.  The Memorial also honors members of the Merchant Marine who served during times of war.

The Memorial is located within Market Village near the new Smyrna City Hall and Smyrna Library.  The Twentieth Century Veterans Memorial was erected in 2000 to pay tribute to veterans from Cobb County who served honorably in the U.S. military during the last century.

Brick pavers will help pave the walkway from the Smyrna Welcome Center to the Memorial.

Veterans and their families and loved ones can take part in the ongoing development of the Memorial by making contributions.  For each $50 contribution, supporters may designate a marble paver for a veteran from anywhere in the U.S. who served in any branch of service.  These 4×8 inch marble pavers, honoring only veterans, will become a permanent part of the Memorial.  For a $35 contribution, 4×8 inch brick pavers may be designated for any veteran, family member, friend or relative.

Court of Honor

A majestic, 60-foot flagpole on a long granite base marking the entry to the Memorial, the Court of Honor is further defined by six smaller flagpoles representing the six branches of military service and a raised stone platform for veteran ceremonies and civic events.

Garden Wall

The Garden Wall begins with a map of the world and reflecting pool.  Inscribed in the stone wall will be 10 zones corresponding to the 10 decades of the twentieth century.  Wars and battles are noted in atimeline etched in marble, and the wal is lined with majestic trees and stone benches for quiet reflection.

Memorial Grove

A solemn, contemplative area, this open space creates the sense of being in a large outdoor room, with a small arbor and granite garden walls inscribed with the names of the Cobb County men and women who died in service.

A Legacy That Will Live On…

The Twentieth Century Veterans Memorial stands as a legacy to the memory of those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.  Educational and informational materials related to the Memorial can be found at the Smyrna Library, located adjacent to the site.

Please help The Twentieth Century Veterans Memorial pay tribute to the men and women who served this country over the last 100 years.

Local Landmark Nominated for National Register of Historic Places

pace house 300x202 Local Landmark Nominated for National Register of Historic Places

The Pace House was constructed sometime between 1865 and 1874 by Solomon Pace.

The Pace House, an antebellum property originally owned by one of Vinings’ earliest families, has recently been nominated for designation on the National Register of Historic Places.  On Fri., Jan. 30, 2009, the nomination went before the Georgia National Register Review Board and was unanimously approved at the state level.  The Georgia Historic Preservation Division will now prepare the nomination to be sent to the National Park Service (NPS) for approval at the national level.

In late 2007, the Vinings Historic Preservation Society (VHPS), which now owns and maintains the Pace House, began its endeavors to nominate the property for listing on the National Register.  Two Georgia State graduate students, Stephanie Cherry and Kimberly Wescott, volunteered their time and worked diligently on the nomination, which they completed in late 2008.

It is a lengthy and time-consuming process to be designated as one of the historic locations on the National Register, which was created by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 to recognize significant properties.  A nomination requires documentation that includes a detailed description of the property. This narrative must include the history, context and historic and/or architectural significance.  After this documentation is prepared, the nomination must be approved by the state preservation board. If it is approved by the state board, it will be sent to Washington, D.C. for final approval by the NPS.

The Pace House was listed on the Cobb County Register of Historic Places in 2004.

The VHPS acquired the property from Ruth Carter Vanneman, great-granddaughter of Solomon Pace, upon her death in 1992. The VHPS began an intensive renovation of the Pace House in 1998, and the house was opened as a special events facility in 1999 and currently functions as such.

The mission of the VHPS is to preserve the historic spirit and structures of Vinings which include the Pace House, Old Pavilion and Vinings Center. It also seeks to educate the public on Vinings’ vibrant history.

Countdown to Halloween

Before you know it, October 31st will be here and the kids will be excited. This is the time of the year that people are enamored with those large orange orbs, otherwise known as pumpkins. In recognition of Columbus Day, we headed off to Burt’s Farm, more commonly known as Burt’s Pumpkin Patch, in Dawsonville. Many of you may be well aware of Burt’s, but for those that haven’t been, it’s something like an annual rite of passage. Kind of like Disney World, you need to take your kids at least once.

Now, Burt’s is not in Smyrna Vinings. It is a trek, but it’s also the most well-known pumpkin patch for metro Atlanta. So load ‘em up and check it out.

The first thing you’ll notice is that they have lots and lots of pumpkins. Large ones, medium one and small ones. Orange one, white ones, and even blue ones. Even have an amazing selection of gourds, corn stalks and everything else you need for your Halloween and Thanksgiving decorating needs.

And of course, there’s nothing better than taking pictures of your kids sitting on pumpkins. Not sure why exactly, but something about all these pumpkins really bring out the shutterbugs.

There even seem to be people taking pictures of people taking pictures of their kids.

Now you may be thinking that it won’t be busy. Afterall, how many people even know where Dawsonville is, let alone want to drive there.

lines of people Countdown to Halloween

Rest assured, you will not be alone. There are lots of people there and lots of lines. Lines to buy your pumpkins, pumpkin pie, pumpkin roll, etc. and lines for the hay ride.

And the line is worth it. Afterall, how many times do kids growing up in the city get to be hauled around in a wagon filled with hay by a giant tractor.

Anyway, keep Burt’s in mind if you’ve never been and you want a daytrip to North Georgia.

And before anyone comments about the “in recognition of Columbus Day”, I’m going under the assumption that if Columbus hadn’t discovered America, then most of us would never have known about pumpkins. And wouldn’t that be sad as we’d miss out on a great photo op for our children. So here’s to you, Chris!
