Nickajack Elementary School Certified as Parent Involvement School of Excellence
Smyrna, GA - More than 840 students at Nickajack Elementary School in Smyrna, GA have one more reason to take pride in their school. National PTA has certified Nickajack Elementary School as a Parent Involvement School of Excellence. PTA’s Parent Involvement Schools of Excellence certification recognizes schools that uphold the highest standards in parent involvement. All schools in the nation are encouraged to submit an application to PTA’s national office.
As part of the certification process, Nickajack Elementary School represented by a diverse team of parents, teachers, community members and students undertook the task of educating the school on the National Standards, invited the school to complete a survey and based on the results created a parent involvement plan. They then applied for one of two distinctions—Certification of Excellence or Recognition of Commitment—based on the results of their self-assessment. Receiving the certification is a symbol of parents, staff, and community members working together to achieve the common goal of helping children succeed.
Some of the notable parent involvement activities at Nickajack Elementary School include American Cancer Society - Relay for Life (Top 10 Cobb County Fundraiser School), International Walk to School Day, Nickajack Spelling Bee, Classroom Reading Parents, Spring Fling, and Nickajack PTA Events such as PTA Bank and PTA School Store and much more.
“Schools that attain parent involvement certification show a strong dedication to student achievement and a welcoming attitude toward families,” said PTA CEO Warlene Gary. “Certification is a mark of excellence.” Beverly Parks, Principal at Nickajack Elementary said “Research shows a direct correlation between parent involvement and student performance. Our parents understand this and to that end, they have been extremely involved and engaged in most areas of our instructional program. I am extremely proud of the commitment and dedication that the Nickajack PTA has shown. It is very apparent that our PTA believes that the home-school connection is vital to the success of our students.”
The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, National Association of Elementary School Principals, National Association of Secondary School Principals, National Education Association, and National School Public Relations Association joined PTA in the development and implementation of the certification program.
